SFCG, Search for Common Ground in Liberia. Key Findings from Civil Society Assessment – 2006 & 2007

In the wake of Liberia’s most recent outbreak of violence in 1996, Search for Common Ground sent an assessment team to evaluate the feasibility of using media – especially radio – as a vehicle to support peace, reconciliation and democracy. In January 1997, the Dutch Foreign Ministry provided Common Ground Productions with a grant to establish Talking Drum Studio (TDS). Over the past two years, TDS became a fully operational radio production studio. Common Ground Productions is committed to this long-term process by taking incremental steps with existing projects to bring the field closer to this goal. In this context, CGP recognized that its projects are creating a new type of journalism and that their impact need to be measured and lessons documented.

Becker, J., Contributions by the Media to Crisis Prevention and Conflict Settlement, [Electronic Version], Conflict & Communication online (2004), Vol. 3, No. 1&2

The media neither start wars, nor can they end them. But communicating media can have an increasingly positive influence on processes of social communication and societal change. The influence of the media is always multi-causal and long-lasting. In terms of crisis prevention and the treatment of conflicts, media influence requires institutional backing in the form of a controversial public pres¬ence, the opportunity for variety and pluralism, media rights as a condition of the rule of law and journalistic ethics codices as a regulating factor for responsible activities on an individual level.

Melone, S.D., G. Terzis, and O. Beleli, Using Media for Conflict Transformation: The Conflict Ground Experience, Berghof Research Centre for Constructive Conflict Management, (2002), Berlin.

The paper argues that while media can, and often do contribute to the escalation of tensions and conflicts, this does not mean that they cannot play a positive role as well. On the contrary, based on the experience of Common Ground (CG), the authors stand for ethical use of media in order to counterbalance the negative effects and/or reverse the damage that has already been done.

The paper premises the analysis on three media theories: gatekeeping, agenda setting and socialisation. The project trained journalists from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan in coverage of conflict transformation issues.
