Strengths:

  • Focuses on social relationships.
  • Can be used to analyse complex, non-linear networks at different levels and scales.
  • Backed up by body of analytical and theoretical literature.

Weaknesses:

  • Difficulties in balancing the need to analyse networks in sufficient depth and breadth with the need to keep analysis simple enough to yield meaningful results.
  • Difficulties in applying social network theory to real life field situations.

Short description:

SNA allows for analysis of the structure of relationships between different actors at different scales, from the local to the global. A range of development programmes can be conceptualised as networks which map out actors, relationships and behaviour patterns, making them easier to visualise, understand and verify.

How to put into practice:

SNA involves the construction of network diagrams that focus on the structure of relationships ranging from local to global fields.
